White House: the US will run out of funds to support Ukraine in the coming weeks

The United States has funds left for military supplies for Ukraine for several more weeks, and further assistance remains in question without additional funding being allocated by Congress. John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, said this in an interview with CNN.

“We still have some funds left. I think we have enough for the next few weeks,” he said (quote according to TASS).

Kirby added that the lack of additional funding will “certainly have an impact” on support for Ukraine in the fall and winter. According to him, Washington wants to be sure that Kyiv “will receive everything it needs,” since combat operations will become more difficult in winter.

He added that arms supplies to Ukraine could also be affected by a “shutdown” – a suspension of the work of the federal government – since Congress has not yet approved either a short-term or a full-fledged budget for 2024. This situation may arise as early as October 1.

On August 10, US President Joe Biden sent a request to the US Congress to allocate another $24 billion to help Ukraine. Of the mentioned amount, more than $13 billion is planned to be used for security assistance, and $7.3 billion for economic and humanitarian assistance.

Many Republican representatives actively oppose the allocation of additional funding, and 29 parliamentarians publicly expressed their position in a letter to Biden. On September 19, Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy said that he was not going to promise Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky the allocation of new funds. “I have questions for him – where is the accountability for the money that we have already spent, what is the plan to achieve victory,” – said He.
