Alexey Viktorovich Kuzmichev was born on October 15, 1962 in Kirov. In 1980–1982 he served as a radio operator in the Soviet army. In 1988 he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISIS).
Together with Mikhail Fridman he worked in the cooperatives “Courier” and “Alfa Photo”. In 1989 he became one of the founders of the venture company Alfa-Eco. In 1990–1995, he served as head of the international department of Alfa-Eco. Participated in the creation of Crown Trade and Finance, later renamed Crown Resources AG. In 1996 he left Alfa-Eco.
In 1997, he headed the board of directors of Crown Resources. In 1998–1999, he was the general director of Sobstvennik LLC. From 1998 to 2006 – member of the board of directors of Alfa Bank. In December 2002, Crown Resources management bought the company from Alfa Group. Alexey Kuzmichev remained in the company as a consultant, but then returned to Alfa-Eco and took over as chairman of the board of directors. In 2006, the Alfa-Eco company was renamed A1.

On March 15, 2022, the European Union added Alexey Kuzmichev to the sanctions list. Sanctions were also imposed against the co-founder of Alfa Group, German Khan.
