What citizens think about biometrics – Kommersant

According to a survey conducted by VTsIOM this year, 32% of citizens do not trust biometrics, 27% trust them. The most common reason for concern is possible interference with privacy (25%), while data leakage worries only 11% of respondents. The most common argument of technology supporters is the help of biometrics in the fight against fraud (24%). Ease of use of services is important for 19% of respondents. “The decision to transfer data to the EBS is influenced by the entire previous history of citizens’ trust in the state’s steps towards digitalization,” says Evgeniy Styrin, head of the international laboratory of digital transformation in public administration at IGiMU HSE. In his opinion, citizens who have positive experience with the government services portal may see additional benefits in the creation of the EBS. At the same time, those who, in principle, do not trust government products and the results of digitalization will submit applications to the MFC for a ban on the use of their biometrics. “Thus, the gap between citizens in terms of receiving benefits from digitalization will only worsen,” believes Evgeny Styrin.
