The Kremlin does not have a clear position regarding the future fate of Ruben Vardanyan. The former head of the government of Nagorno-Karabakh was detained by the security forces of Azerbaijan while trying to leave the territory of the unrecognized republic. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov made it clear that citizens of the country can count on support. However, Vardanyan at one time refused a Russian passport. Now the former investor and major businessman has been brought to Baku. Kommersant FM political commentator Dmitry Drize does not rule out that Vardanyan will be sentenced to a long term.
Ruben Vardanyan was detained as a representative of the illegal, from Azerbaijan’s point of view, separatist administration of the non-existent Artsakh region. The corresponding photos have already spread all over the world. Logically, big trouble awaits him. Moreover, this very regime, which he actually headed, waged an armed struggle against the legally recognized Azerbaijani government, as they believe in Baku.
It’s not difficult to guess what will happen next: a show trial, an act of mercy for the vanquished, a legal amnesty.
It is also possible to exchange for prisoners of war or someone else. Moreover, the first option seems very likely. Azerbaijan already demanded his extradition. Just look at Turkey, which does not stand on ceremony with its opponents at all, despite all the requests, demands and even threats.
East is a delicate matter. You need to be firm so that others are discouraged. Moreover, all this, of course, will not end and settle down so easily. However, we won’t make any guesses. There is a big political party here, which, apparently, will be played out.
As for Russia, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov was not aware of the event. Apparently, he was also not widely aware that Ruben Vardanyan at one time decided to renounce Russian citizenship. Nevertheless, according to the Kremlin representative, the Russian Federation intends to somehow protect it in accordance with the law. If he still has a Russian passport, then one conversation, but if not, then no.
Rather, it seems that the West will show greater activity in this area – the USA, France and further on the list. Armenian diasporas in Europe. There is another difficult factor: Ruben Karlenovich, a well-known investor in the past, is well aware of how to do business with Russia, how the domestic financial and banking systems are structured, and how payments are made, including international ones.
Even though he has retired, theoretically all this information may well be of interest to the relevant services of former Western partners from the point of view of circumventing sanctions and other similar actions. So we have to repeat it again, no matter how cynical it may sound: for Ilham Aliyev, the detention of Vardanyan is another success. Moreover, the lyrics are already inappropriate.
Vardanyan knew what he was getting into, or should have at least understood the consequences of the decision made, so, apparently, he would have to drink the cup to the bottom.
Everything that happened before—the image of a respectable Russian millionaire, numerous economic forums, colorful speeches, stories about investment prospects—is far behind us, in a past life. This is already history.
However, there are big Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations ahead and a personal meeting between Nikol Pashinyan and Aliyev in Granada. There, in fact, everything can be decided. But in general, who, as they say, could have believed five or six years ago that this could happen to Vardanyan. We can say right away: no one could and did not imagine. This is to the question that in this world absolutely everything is possible – any turn. You can’t guarantee anything. And nothing is eternal on earth. Probably we shouldn’t forget about this either.
