Authorities in the United States and Canada are trying to find a solution for early detection and defense against Russian and Chinese long-range cruise missiles. An article by Stephen Bryan, a senior researcher at the Yorktown Institute, on the Weapons and Strategy portal notes that for this purpose, the United States plans to build 4 over-the-horizon radar systems (OGRLS) for the first time in 20 years. The Canadian military wants to commission two additional systems to protect the northwestern part of the country.
These six systems are designed to quickly detect and track missile launches from Russia and China. At the same time, the analyst points out that the Pentagon does not yet have a clear plan on how to shoot down such missiles. He believes that even after completing the installation of the air defense missile system, the United States will face a serious challenge – the lack of effective means to destroy Russian and Chinese missiles in the country’s airspace.
“Aside from detection problems, the US does not have a program to defeat cruise missiles that have already entered US airspace. This is a big problem because there are many potential targets and few systems optimized against small, low-flying threats,” the article says.
