Russian President Vladimir Putin held meeting with the Chairman of the Constitutional Court (CC) Valery Zorkin. The head of state thanked Mr. Zorkin for ensuring the work of the court and emphasized that despite disagreements with the executive authorities, the Constitutional Court is successfully fulfilling its main task – monitoring compliance with the norms of the Russian Constitution.

At the beginning of the meeting, Vladimir Putin and Valery Zorkin exchanged congratulations on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Russian Constitution. “I would like to thank you for how constructively this work was structured—principled, but constructive. I know that sometimes difficult issues arise in interaction with executive authorities. But, strictly speaking, this is what the Constitutional Court is for—to monitor compliance with the norms of the country’s fundamental law,” the president noted.

Mr. Zorkin pointed out that the strength of the decisions of the Constitutional Court is ensured because Russia is a rule of law state, “in which the authorities each understand their place and interact.” “I must say with all confidence that such interaction exists. Of course, we don’t always like our decisions, that’s understandable. But I think that we still strived to ensure that the Constitution was in effect and did not turn into a dead document,” he noted.

Today Vladimir Putin also held meeting with judges of the Constitutional Court. He noted that the Basic Law of Russia was adopted at a difficult time for the country, “associated with acute civil and political confrontation.” Despite this, according to the president, the Constitution continues to successfully protect the rights, freedoms and interests of Russians.
