Vučić says Serbia has no plans to impose sanctions against Russia

Serbia is not going to impose sanctions against Russia, which supported Belgrade in the UN and other international organizations. The country continues to be guided by its own interests and pursue a “complicated policy,” said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, answering questions from deputies in parliament.

“This weak Vučić and this weak Serbian government are the only ones in Europe who have not imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation. We continue to hold on and behave in accordance with the interests of Serbia, and we do not plan to further impose sanctions against the Russian Federation, ”said Vučić (quote according to TASS).

The Serbian leader stressed that he does not consider sanctions to be a solution to the problem. In addition, according to him, Serbia “does not want to go against” those who previously supported it. Vučić called this position of the country “difficult policy”.

Earlier, the EU countries have repeatedly criticized the Serbian authorities for their unwillingness to join the sanctions against Russia. In June, MEPs adopted a resolution requiring Belgrade to join the EU sanctions.

At the same time, the country’s president emphasizes that Serbia stands for the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but is not going to impose sanctions against Russia. Vučić said in August that Serbia was committed to maintaining an independent policy on sanctions against Russia, but “couldn’t promise anything.”

After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia. The measures taken affected energy, the high-tech sector, aviation, the banking industry, the mining industry, the automotive industry, etc. At the same time, Serbia refused to impose sanctions.

At the same time, European authorities recognize fatigue of EU citizens from the adopted restrictions against the Russian Federation. Thus, the Hungarian authorities have repeatedly stated that the sanctions policy has not justified itself and even harmed the economies of the EU countries. In September, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó informed, who asked a question during a meeting of the heads of the energy departments of the EU countries in Brussels about the need to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia. He noted that his question remained unanswered.
