Vučić lifted Serbian army’s high alert regime

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić ordered the abolition of the high alert regime of the Serbian army. About it informs Tanjug agency, citing the presidential administration.
Vucic ordered bring the Serbian armed forces to the highest level of combat readiness on December 26 against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the north of Kosovo and Metohija. The Minister of Defense of the country, Milos Vucevic, noted that such a decision is necessary in order to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia, as well as to prevent “pogrom and terror against the Serbs, wherever they live.”
On 10 December, Dejan Pantic, an ethnic Serb and former Kosovo police officer, was detained at the Yarine checkpoint. He was suspected of attacking the election commission. In response to the actions of Pristina, the Serbian population began to erect barricades, blocking the passage along the highway in several settlements near the checkpoint, and went out to protest.
The EU missions in Kosovo (EULEX) were pulled to the barricades. The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, demanded that the Kosovo Serbs “immediately remove the barricades.” Due to the aggravation of the situation in the region, Vučić convened an emergency meeting of the Security Council of Serbia. The day before, December 28, the US and EU authorities urged all parties to the emerging “tense situation” in Kosovo to immediate de-escalation.
Earlier today Vucic announced the beginning of the dismantling of barricades in northern Kosovo on 29 December. According to him, it will take from one to two days. At the same time, Vučić added, Belgrade’s distrust of Pristina has not gone away. He stressed that the Serbian authorities will not allow “to play with the lives of the Serbs and their existence.”
