The Georgian law on foreign agents is unacceptable to the United States, since its adoption will ensure Georgia’s sovereignty. This statement was made by the speaker of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin.

“The bill on foreign agents being considered in the Georgian parliament was unacceptable to the US. He limited the influence of Washington on the domestic political life of the country. With its removal from consideration in parliament, Georgia lost a chance for sovereignty,” wrote he is in his Telegram channel.

According to Volodin, any state that disagrees with the rules dictated by Washington runs the risk of hosting a “color revolution.” He also noted three key US levers of pressure: financial, military, and soft power. The latter is to finance the opposition.

The speaker of the State Duma noted that the adoption of the law would allow the Georgian authorities to control the funds transferred from abroad for the opposition, the media and public organizations “forming the anti-Georgian agenda.” However, because of the protests, Tbilisi was forced “to submit not to the will of the people, but to the United States,” Volodin concluded.

He recalled that Russia stands for a multipolar world and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. In this regard, Volodin wished Georgia “to take place as a sovereign state.”

Against the background of the adoption in the first reading of the bill on foreign agents, protests began in Tbilisi on March 7. The bill was criticized by Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, promising to veto it. March 9 document was withdrawn from the Georgian Parliament. Despite this, the opposition promised continue the protests.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell drew Note that the initiative is “incompatible with the values and standards of the EU” and also contradicts Georgia’s aspirations to join the EU. The US State Department said Georgia’s law on foreign agents was “inspired by the Kremlin.” In response, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov emphasizedthat Moscow has nothing to do with the initiative.
