The revival of river transport in Russia will serve as incentives for the development of the entire economy of the country, declared State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin in his Telegram channel.
“Russia is among the top three countries in terms of the length of waterways. It is important to use this advantage… An important economic factor: a kilometer of transportation by ship is 15% cheaper than by rail, and 25% cheaper than by car,” he wrote.
The speaker of the State Duma also drew attention to the fact that 90% of GDP is created in regions with inland waterways and 80% of the country’s population lives.
At the same time, the industry has a number of problems, among which Volodin singled out the lack of a built route network of river passenger transportation between cities, dependence on imported components, the need for new ships and personnel, as well as the deterioration of ports and berths.
All these issues will be discussed at an offsite meeting of the State Duma Council at a plant for the production of hydrofoils in the Nizhny Novgorod region on August 21, Volodin said, stating the importance of passing laws that will accelerate the revival of passenger river transport.
“We plan to start with the regions located on the Volga River. There are 16 of them. And if we talk about the Volga basin – 38,” he added.
Earlier, at the June meeting on the development of river navigation, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed expanding the civil shipbuilding program until 2035, both in terms of the number of ships and the amount of funding. This year, in order to achieve the goals of the plan, it was decided to finance the construction of 260 vessels in 2023-2027. using the funds of the National Welfare Fund, the President noted. In total, the program provides for the construction of about 1,000 ships.
