Higher Qualification Board of Judges (HQJC) of Russia announced on accepting applications for the position of Chairman of the Supreme Court. Applications from candidates are accepted until March 22. Vyacheslav Lebedev, who headed the Supreme Court for 34 years, died February 23 at the age of 80.

In accordance with the law “On the Status of Judges in the Russian Federation,” an applicant for the position of head of the Supreme Court must be over 35 years old, have a higher legal education and at least ten years of professional experience. He should not have a criminal record, residence permit in other countries, illnesses leading to disability, chronic or protracted mental disorders. The Chairman of the Supreme Court is appointed by the Federation Council. His term of office is six years.

Since July 1989, the Supreme Court has been headed by the Honored Lawyer of Russia Vyacheslav Lebedev. He died on February 23 at the age of 81. According to Kommersant, the cause of his death was oncology. Vyacheslav Lebedev was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery.
