Vietnam announces preparations for Putin’s visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit Vietnam. This was announced by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Tinh at a meeting with Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.
“In addition to your visit, we are also actively preparing for the upcoming visit of the Russian leader,” he said (cit. by RIA Novosti).
Pham Minh Tinh recalled the renewed contacts between Moscow and Hanoi after the pandemic. In particular, Minister of Public Security of Vietnam To Lam is currently visiting Russia.
Medvedev arrived to Vietnam on a working visit on May 21. Today, May 22, he will hold talks with General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong and Permanent Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Truong Thi Mai, and will also meet with Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong.
Among the issues for discussion is the possibility of using national currencies in mutual trade and withdrawing cash using cards of the Russian Mir system. The parties will also touch upon the work of Gazprom, Zarubezhneft and Novatek in Vietnam.
According to TASS, trade between the two countries fell by more than a third due to Western sanctions, from $7 billion to $4.569 billion. By 2025, trade is expected to reach $10 billion, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said in April during a Russian -Vietnamese Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation. During the meeting, he also proposed opening national tourism offices in the two countries, and also invited Vietnamese teams to participate in the international digital tournament, which will be held in Kazan in 2024.
