The Union of Railway Transport Operators (SOJT) is seeking compensation for rolling stock operators for losses due to the retention of part of their freight wagons in Ukraine and Finland. SOZHT sent such a proposal to the Ministry of Transport, according to Vedomosti with reference to sources.
In total, about 16,000 Russian railcars got stuck in Ukraine and Finland. This is slightly more than 1% of the total fleet of freight cars in Russia, which reaches approximately 1.2 million units. Operators estimated the maximum amount of compensation at 32 billion rubles. One wagon costs an average of 2 million rubles, the newspaper writes.
As one of Vedomosti’s sources specified, the operators turned to the Ministry of Transport after the decision of the Russian government to pay compensation to the owners of trucks arrested in Ukraine. In October, the government allocated 1.64 billion rubles for these purposes.
Recall that in March, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on the forced seizure of property of the Russian Federation and its residents. The same month, Ukrainian Railways announced plans to detain Russian freight cars. According to Vedomosti, these cars belonged, among other things, to Novotrans, Eurosib, New Transportation Company and Balttransservice. Finland also arrested about 1,000 wagons of Russian companies subject to EU sanctions.
