Rospatent expects a 30% increase in the number of applications for brand registration due to the self-employed

Thanks to the ability to register their own trademarks by the self-employed, the number of applications for brand registration in the Russian Federation could grow by 30%, said Yury Zubov, head of Rospatent. Previously, only legal entities and individual entrepreneurs could own trademarks. At the end of June, Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing the self-employed to register trademarks. They will have this opportunity from June 2023.
Mr. Zubov explained that this law will allow the self-employed to “protect their developments, products and services, brand them.” “All our technological systems are ready, we are recruiting people, including in the Novosibirsk center, (to.— ”b”) to ensure the expected increase of 30% in such applications without loss of terms and quality,” he said during a working trip to Novosibirsk.
The press service of Rospatent told TASS that in ten months of 2022 they received more than 90 thousand applications for trademark registration.
Against the backdrop of sanctions, foreign brands that left Russia began to fight with local replicas. In particular, in the summer, Coca-Cola filed an appeal against a court decision that allowed domestic Chernogolovka to produce Fantola. The cult marmalade manufacturer Haribo also decided to protect its trademark. He filed a complaint against the use of the Russian Haribo brand.
