US to transfer jet engine technology to India

The American company General Electric (GE) announced that it has received US government approval to transfer jet engine technology to India, Indian Defense News reports citing a company statement.
The approval will reportedly allow GE to jointly produce jet engines for India’s fighter program with India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
Indian Defense News notes that a similar deal between GE and HAL fell through in 2012 because the Indian side wanted more in terms of technology transfer than the US was willing to offer. Sources of the publication suggest that now Washington and New Delhi have reached an agreement on a higher level of cooperation in technology transfer. Thus, India would become the only US ally partner to make such a deal.
The article notes that the deal will require congressional approval, but it has already received high-level approval in principle.
The terms of technology transfer, terms and payment procedure are currently being discussed. The agreement will be signed and made public during the forthcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US on June 21-24. Indian Defense News notes that 500-600 Indian SMEs will benefit from the deal.
