According to information published by Reuters, US President Joe Biden is preparing to sign a defense cooperation agreement with Papua New Guinea. The main goal of the agreement is to protect the United States from possible threats from China.
Thus, one of the clauses of the agreement allows the US Coast Guard to patrol the economic zone of Papua New Guinea. Such measures will help protect the country’s natural resources, including fisheries, as well as ensure the safety of water communications in the region.
“Chinese anti-ship ballistic missiles, if deployed in the Pacific Islands, could halt US and Australian navies and cut off vital trade routes,” the newspaper notes.
