US State Department urges Baku to open Lachin corridor

On Sunday, April 30, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a telephone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to discuss a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Baku and Yerevan. During the conversation, Blinken expressed confidence that a peace agreement could be reached.
At the same time, Blinken noted that the creation by the Azerbaijani military of a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor undermines efforts to establish confidence in the peace process. He called for the road to be opened as soon as possible to commercial and private vehicles.
Blinken also held a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on April 29. During this conversation, he stressed that the United States considers a direct dialogue between Baku and Yerevan the only way to establish a long-term truce in the South Caucasus.
