US serviceman sentenced to prison for transferring secret data to China
US Navy serviceman Wenheng Zhao was sentenced to 27 months in prison for transmitting classified information to a representative of the PRC intelligence services.
According to a publication on the website of the US Department of Justice, he was also ordered to pay a fine of $5.5 thousand for transferring confidential information relating to the American military sphere to a representative of the PRC intelligence agency for a bribe.
The Ministry of Justice explained: Zhao transmitted data about the operational orders of the command, naval exercises in the Pacific Ocean, and the operation of the radar system on the Japanese island of Okinawa.
From August 2021 to May 2023, Zhao, according to the department, received a reward for his actions in the amount of at least $14.8 thousand. He admitted to transferring classified military data in October 2023.
