US Senate approves $4.5 billion military aid bill for Taiwan

On September 14, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a bill to strengthen security ties with Taiwan and sent it to the House for consideration. The island is proposed to be given the status of “the main ally outside NATO.” Eighteen countries, including Japan, Australia and Israel, have this status, and it facilitates the supply of American weapons. The same bill provides for the supply of $4.5 billion in weapons to deter a possible attempt by China to return the island by military means. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on September 13 that the White House hopes to work with Congress on the bill.
