Blinken: US will continue to protect human rights in China and around the world
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken pledged to protect human rights in China and around the world. He made such a statement on the day dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the student protests on Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989.
“The United States will continue to defend human rights and fundamental freedoms in China and the world,” the US diplomat said.
During his speech, Blinken said he considered the 1989 Beijing incident a “harsh crackdown” directed by the Chinese government against “peaceful Chinese pro-democracy protesters” as well as their supporters.
In Beijing on April 15, 1989, there were mass protests by students who demanded democratic reforms. The performances were suppressed by the Chinese army with the help of tanks. To date, the exact number of victims is still unknown. More than 200 people died and about 7,000 were injured as a result of the protests, according to official figures.
