U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrives on an unannounced visit to Kyiv amid more than $2 billion in military aid from Washington to Ukraine and neighboring countries, reported AFP agency.
How clarifies Bloomberg, Blinken’s trip is timed to coincide with the celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 24 and is designed to demonstrate Washington’s support for Kyiv. This visit was the third for Blinken since the beginning of the Russian special operation and the fifth in his role as head of the State Department.
Information on the allocation of $2 billion in aid to Ukraine confirmed also a Reuters source, who clarified that we are talking about military assistance to Ukraine and 18 other neighboring countries, which “may be threatened by Russian aggression.” At the same time, how much of these funds will be allocated directly to Ukraine is still unknown.
Earlier today, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that President Joe Biden approved a new $675 million military assistance package for Ukraine. The new assistance package includes HARM anti-radar missiles, M101 105-mm howitzers and shells for them, Humvee jeeps, anti-tank systems , small arms and their ammunition.
In late August, Biden announced a $2.98 billion aid package for Ukraine. This tranche is expected to allow Ukraine to purchase air defense systems, artillery systems, various ammunition, drones and radars to ensure “long-term self-defense.”
