US refuses to apply Poland’s Collective Defense Clause to NATO

The American side currently does not see any grounds for invoking Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which provides for the collective defense by member countries of the territory of one of the members of the North Atlantic Alliance. This was announced on Wednesday, August 2, by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
As the official noted, “there is a process for NATO countries to invoke Article 5 of the charter, we are not at that stage yet.”
Earlier, Miller noted that Poland is a member of NATO, allies in the North Atlantic Alliance ready to defend its territory. The official assured of the strength of the alliance with Poland and promised that “if necessary, we will defend every inch of NATO territory.”
At the same time, the coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, John Kirby, said that the American authorities were not aware of any specific threat that could come from the fighters of the Wagner grouplocated on the territory of Belarus. The official clarified that he was talking about the absence of threats to Poland and to any other NATO allies of the United States.
