US predicts more months of fierce fighting in Ukraine

The administration of US President Joe Biden expects fierce fighting to take place in Ukraine for several more months.
How notes Washington Post columnist Missy Ryan, the White House was forced to announce indefinite support for Kyiv, not having a clear idea when the situation could be resolved by any treaty.
She cites a senior US State Department official who, on condition of anonymity, said that the US does not regard the recent UAF counter-offensive as a significant success because Russia has retained a powerful force.
“They have significant equipment, weapons and ammunition,” the official said, adding that he meant both the large amount that is located on the territory of Ukraine, controlled by Russian troops, and everything that is available in Russia itself.
“And so it’s far from over, despite the momentum,” the State Department spokesman added.
The article explains that the US therefore chose a strategy that would provide Ukraine with long-term military assistance without the immediate introduction of heavier weapons that could provoke a worsening of the situation.
U.S. officials expect heavy fighting through the fall as both sides try to get into the best positions possible before the onset of winter makes transportation and fighting difficult.
The observer also notes that Pentagon officials are now deciding how to help Ukraine strengthen its air defenses and increase the combat capability of fighters.
Recall that the day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a press conference following his visit to Uzbekistan, commented on Kyiv’s decision to abandon all agreements with Russia and seek victory on the battlefield. “Well, take the flag,” Putin said, adding that the goals and objectives of the special operation are not subject to adjustment.
