On March 28, the second summit of heads of state “For Democracy” began in Washington (the first took place in 2021). The purpose of the event is stated to “strengthen democracies” in the face of growing internal instability, corruption, inequality and the threat from “autocracies”, to which the United States ranks Russia and China.
The agenda of the summit, according to the US State Department, is the coordination of invited countries with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), as well as discussion of achieving a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine. They will also consider the issues of combating poverty, achieving economic growth, developing technologies in conjunction with the preservation of democratic rights and freedoms. The number of participants compared to 2021 has been increased from 111 to 121 countries (out of 193 UN member countries), including Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Mauritania, Mozambique and Tanzania. A week ago, delegations from these African countries participated in the inter-parliamentary conference “Russia-Africa in a Multipolar World” held in Moscow on March 19-20. President Vladimir Putin, who was present at the event, in his speech pointed to common interests in the confrontation with the neo-colonial ideology of the West.
