US considers preventive sanctions against China

The United States is considering a package of sanctions against China to keep it from a military operation to return Taiwan under its control. Taipei is demanding similar sanctions from the EU, Reuters reported on Sept. 14. According to the agency, the idea is to impose sanctions on top of measures already taken by the West against Beijing, limiting trade with China and investment in sensitive technologies: the production of chips and certain types of telecommunications equipment. According to Reuters interlocutors, the discussion of such a scenario began in Washington at the end of February, after Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine. And it continued after the reaction of the PRC to the visit to Taipei of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in early August.
A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, commenting on the information of the agency, warned against underestimating the capabilities and will of Beijing “in protecting national sovereignty, territorial integrity and realizing the reunification of the motherland.”
