The Russian authorities made a “miscalculation” by deciding to launch a special military operation in Ukraine. This opinion was expressed on Thursday, April 27, by United States Ambassador to Moscow Lynn Tracy in an interview with Kommersant.
According to the diplomat, Russia decided to launch a special operation, “obviously expecting that the Ukrainians would welcome the troops that entered, but the Ukrainians did not” and “responded with resistance.”
Lynn Tracy expressed the opinion that Moscow misinterpreted the situation in Ukraine in 2022 by launching a special operation, just like in 2014, when Crimea and Sevastopol became part of the Russian Federation.
The American ambassador also doubted that the special operation contributes to strengthening the national security of Russia.
On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. The press secretary of the head of state of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov specified that the goals of the special operation are also the liberation of Donbass and other occupied territories in a number of new regions of the Russian Federation.
In addition, Vladimir Putin pointed to the approach of NATO close to the Russian borders, despite promises not to expand the North Atlantic Alliance. With this in mind, the president called another goal of the special operation to obtain security guarantees for Russia.
