US ambassador criticizes Hungary for ‘frivolous’ approach to NATO

The head of the US diplomatic mission in Budapest, David Pressman, said that the Hungarian leadership, unlike other allies, tends to view its NATO membership as a contract rather than an obligation under an agreement, so the republic continues to ignore the interests of its allies while strengthening ties with Moscow.
At a meeting with representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Budapest, the ambassador emphasized that the United States is committed to defending Hungary not only because of the implementation of formal agreements, such as the allocation of funds for defense and participation in joint exercises.
He also drew attention to the importance of long-term commitments and expressed doubts about the consistency of Hungary’s “radical” foreign policy with the interests of American business, which is a major investor and trading partner of this country.
