The number of hours worked per person on average continues to decline globally and stands at 43.9 hours per week. At the same time, as calculated by the International Labor Organization (ILO), more than a third of the world’s workforce (35.4%) works more than 48 hours a week – primarily in the countries of South and East Asia. The sectors of the economy with the longest working week are trade, transport and communications, as well as manufacturing. The impact of COVID-19 on average working hours was short-lived, with the WEF estimating that in the first quarter of 2022, global total hours worked were only 2% below pre-pandemic levels.
