Universal Music and Deezer launch new streaming model – Kommersant

French streaming service Deezer announced on the launch of a new artist payout model developed in partnership with record label Universal Music. It will first launch in France in the fourth quarter and then expand to other countries where Deezer has a presence.
Under the new model, Deezer will reward “professional artists” first. The service includes those who have at least 1 thousand listens per month from more than 500 unique listeners. The service will double their payments. Also, payouts will be doubled for those tracks with which music fans most often interact. In addition, the service will disable the monetization of “audio noise”, which is not related to creativity. Its share on the platform is about 2% of the total number of tracks.
According to Michael Nash, Vice President of Universal Music, the new model will “better support and reward artists at all stages of their career, whether they have 1,000, 100,000 or 100 million listeners.” At the same time, data from Deezer itself shows that the new model is more likely to encourage only major artists. 97% of music downloaders on the Deezer platform account for just 2% of total streams. While only 2% of artists had more than 1 thousand unique listeners every month.
