The EP primaries preceding the September elections were not without surprises, at least for an outside observer. In a number of constituencies, incumbent deputies and other well-known politicians in the regions could not get enough votes. Somewhere eminent and high-status party members lost to no less experienced colleagues, and somewhere they gave way to new, not so well-known politicians – and sometimes even quite exotic candidates: for example, an MMA fighter, a native of USA Jeffrey Monson.
