Rallies against the waste of budget money took place on Saturday in Odessa and Kiev, the Ukrainian agency UNIAN reported. The protesters demanded to stop money laundering at government tenders and to direct these funds to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In Lviv, people also protested by pouring red paint on paving stones to draw attention to Mayor Andrei Sadovoy, whom they accuse of withholding budget money in accounts to earn interest.
In Kiev, protesters demanded that the authorities increase funding for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the budget for next year, and not spend money on various city projects – on “the newest paving stones and the best flower beds,” the Public TV channel reported. Protesters also doused the Kyiv City Administration building with red paint to express their dissatisfaction.
Recently, the Ukrainian parliament adopted the state budget for 2023 with a deficit of 1.296 trillion hryvnia (about $35.1 billion). Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal noted that the draft state budget for 2023 provides for revenues of 1.28 trillion hryvnia (about $34.6 billion) and expenses of 2.57 trillion hryvnia (about $69.6 billion). The monthly budget deficit is estimated at $3 billion, which Ukraine plans to close through external borrowing.
