The number of unemployed increased by 344 thousand, up to 6 million people. Of working Americans, 6.5% worked remotely in August due to pandemic restrictions, down slightly from July, when 7.1% of workers were telecommuting.
According to the US Department of Labor, 315,000 new jobs were created last month, more than expected. This marks the 20th consecutive month of job growth, with the total now 240,000 higher than before the pandemic. In total, over the past 12 months, 5.8 million new jobs have been added in the United States against the background of the recovery of the labor market after the pandemic. Most of all in August there were new jobs in the service sector – 68 thousand, of which 14 thousand places – in the development of computer systems and related services, 13 thousand – management and technical consulting services, 10 thousand – architectural and engineering services. In the field of legal services, the number of jobs decreased by 9,000. There were 48,000 new jobs in the healthcare sector, 44,000 in retail trade, and 22,000 in industrial production. The median hourly wage rose 0.3% to $32.36.
The average working week decreased by 0.1 hours to 34.5 hours.
