UN Commission: in May the US did not eliminate the leader of al-Qaeda in Idlib

The strike carried out in May by the American army on the Syrian province of Idlib killed not the leader of al-Qaeda (a terrorist organization banned in Russia), but an elderly Syrian civilian, according to a report investigating human rights violations in the Arab country, presented at 54 th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
The report refers to a drone attack on May 3 in the Kuranii area. The US military claimed that the target of the strike was a senior al-Qaeda official. They then said that after “assessing the credibility of the information regarding civilian casualties,” they had launched a formal investigation. As a result, the commission found no evidence that the deceased was anyone other than a civilian or took part in hostilities.
UN experts believe the strike may have violated the precautionary principle of the attack, or been poorly planned, or the intended target was not properly verified.
In May, The Washington Post reported that 56-year-old former bricklayer Lotfi Hassan Misto had died. His family claimed that he was not associated with terrorists and was tending sheep at the time of the American Hellfire missile strike. The family describes the father of 10 children as a kind, hard-working man who was very poor.
The US military illegally controls territories in the east and northeast of Syria, where the largest oil and gas fields are located. Damascus has repeatedly called the presence of the American military in Syria an occupation and state piracy for the purpose of stealing oil. Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky noted that the illegal presence of US troops in Syria has become one of the main destabilizing factors and called on Washington to withdraw troops from the country.
