A high-level meeting on the grain deal will be held in Istanbul next week. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary General, transmits TASS.
“UN representatives will participate today in a technical meeting convened at the initiative of Turkey to prepare for a high-level meeting to be held in Istanbul next week,” he said.
The UN expressed hope for “constructive and frank discussions” that will help overcome difficulties in extending and fully implementing the terms of the grain deal.
Formerly at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation reportedthat a new round of consultations will be held in Moscow on May 5 on the implementation of the terms of the second part of the grain deal between Russia and the UN. On the same day, a meeting of delegations from Turkey, Russia and Ukraine is planned in Istanbul to discuss a grain deal, declared at the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
The grain deal was extended in mid-March until May 18. April 25 Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saidthat the situation around the agreement reached an impasse. The minister pointed to the unwillingness to remove obstacles to the export of Russian fertilizers, despite their shortage, and also to connect Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT. In the Kremlin called the prospects for extending the agreement are “not very good”.
The grain deal was concluded on July 22, 2022 by representatives of Turkey and the UN, on the one hand, and representatives of Russia and Ukraine, on the other. Separate agreements were concluded with Moscow and Kiev: the first was for the export of Ukrainian grain from three ports, including Odessa, Yuzhny and Chernomorsk, and the second was for assistance in the export of Russian grain and fertilizers. Moscow has repeatedly noted that the second part of the deal is not being implemented.
