What is UNRWA

UNRWA was created by the UN in 1949 immediately after the first Arab-Israeli war to provide humanitarian assistance to Palestinian displaced persons and refugees (according to UN estimates, there are about 5.9 million people in total). The agency has assisted four generations of Palestinian refugees and provides education, health and food services in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, the organization’s website says. There are approximately 13,000 UNRWA staff in Gaza, mostly Palestinians. According to them, 159 UNRWA workers were killed during the fighting in the Palestinian enclave.
