Ukrainian stand-up comedian Andriy Shchegel fled the country after receiving summons to join the army. He explained in an interview with journalist Roman Skripin on his Youtube channel that in this way he realized his right to life.
Using profanity, Shchegel admitted that he left “like a rat” after he received three subpoenas to the draft board.
“I define myself as a free person. I realized that I was uncomfortable and that I could no longer,” said the comedian.
According to him, he received permission to leave, as an artist, which he processed for two months. It was issued for six people, but only five left, since the name of one person was spelled incorrectly.
“So it’s all done and very easy,” he commented.
According to the permission, the artist was supposed to return to Ukraine, but remained in Turkey in a “comfortable psychological environment.” Since he can only stay here for 90 days, then he will go to Albania, then on a tour of Europe, Bali and somewhere else where you can be without documents.
The dandy noted that he had no remorse. “I proceed from the fact that it is the choice of the guys to die,” he added.
After that, the comedian was criticized by Ukrainian users. And the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine published a statement on its website in which it called the actions of the comedian unacceptable. The Ministry intends to initiate increased liability for violating the rules for leaving and returning to Ukraine men of military age, as well as tightening the procedure for obtaining permits for temporary travel abroad.
