The Ukrainian Air Force already has experience operating American F-16 fighters, Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said on the air of the telethon.
He noted that the F-16 aircraft had already landed in Ukraine.
“The F-16 plane, it was in Ukraine. He landed at our airfields, we conducted joint exercises with F-16 pilots, and we have experience in operating the F-16 aircraft, respectively. I think it’s significant,” he said.
Now Ukraine, according to the commander, is preparing runways and building protective structures.
Earlier, the commander of the US Air Force in Europe and Africa, James Hecker, said that the first US F-16 fighters could be sent to Ukraine no earlier than next year. At the same time, management training at a sufficient level can take up to five years. The military leader noted that Kyiv sends novice pilots with close to zero flying hours for training. He stressed that before sitting in the F-16 pilot’s seat, Ukrainians will first have to practice on airplanes with propellers, then master the jet combat training Alpha Jet. At the same time, the Air Force commander urged not to place too high hopes on the F-16. He noted that this project will not become a “silver bullet”, but will only make it easier for Kyiv to use the existing air-to-ground weapons.
