Former EC head Juncker doubted Ukraine’s accession to the EU in the next five years
It is unlikely that Ukraine will be able to become a member of the European Union (EU) in the next five years. This statement was made by the former head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, in an interview with Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
According to him, Ukraine can be integrated into the European Union partially and gradually. At the same time, he emphasized that he is not against it if “differentiated membership” facilitates the prospects of joining the association.
“I am no longer involved in the details of the negotiations, but a gradual rapprochement, a kind of almost membership of Ukraine, would probably be worth considering,” Juncker said.
In addition, he emphasized that corruption is still “a constant problem in Ukraine,” which is one of the obstacles to the country’s accession to the European Union.
