Ukraine has had problems recruiting new fighters for the army, according to the Wall Street Journal.
According to him, the Ukrainian authorities are struggling to recruit replacements, often recruiting those who have neither the desire nor the training for service. As a result, there is a growing number of men of combat age who are trying to evade service.
The WSJ writes that one Ukrainian paid nearly $10,000 to avoid being drafted, a second ignored five military subpoenas, and a third avoids public places to avoid receiving a subpoena.
The publication gives examples of those who are trying to leave Ukraine in various ways or hiding from mobilization within the country. Examples are also given when men who are clearly not fit for service are mobilized. The material tells the story of a disabled man who was declared fit for service, despite the absence of hands. According to relatives, another died on the front lines within a month of being mobilized after 10 days of training.
