Ukraine decided to file a claim with the WTO over the extension of the grain embargo

On September 18, Kiev intends to begin the process of filing a claim with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against Hungary, Poland and Slovakia due to their extension of the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain after September 15, contrary to the decision of the EC. Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka said this in an interview with Politico.
“It is important to prove that these actions are legally unlawful,” Kachka said.
According to Kachka, for many years it was the EC that acted as a mediator in trade negotiations and an institution of trade policy for the entire EU; Kyiv is accustomed to working on such a basis. He stressed that the systematic approach of Budapest and Warsaw to ignore the position of EU institutions in trade policy will become a problem for the EU in the future.
In addition, the Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine noted that Kyiv will have to respond to Warsaw’s actions and introduce a ban on the import of Polish vegetables and fruits. He also clarified that Hungary’s expansion of the trade embargo by 25 items on agricultural products from Ukraine serves as a “political statement” about blocking trade with Kiev and ignoring Brussels.
