The National Agency of Ukraine for the Prevention of Corruption (NAPC) has included the Chinese automobile company Geely in the list of international “war sponsors”. This was reported on the website of the department.
The NAPC explains the decision to include the company in this list by the fact that the Chinese company continues to pay taxes to the Russian budget by selling its cars in the country, while other automakers from Europe, Japan and Korea have ceased their activities in the Russian market.
In its message, the Ukrainian department cites the words of the owner of Geely, Li Shufu, who said that he did not understand why he should “force each of his auto brands to punish a Russian client.” The entrepreneur also supported Geely’s decision to increase sales in Russia. NAPC notes that Geely car sales more than doubled in the first three months of 2023.
In April 2023, sales of the automaker Geely in Russia grew 14 times to 6113 units, which allowed the company to close the top three market leaders. In second place was the Chinese brand Haval, in the first place – the domestic manufacturer “AvtoVAZ“.
In April 2023, NAPC added Xiaomi to this list. This decision was justified by the fact that Xiaomi not only continued to work in Russia after the start of the special operation, but “still” remains the leader in smartphone sales in the country. Xiaomi spoke against this decision, answering that the company does not support any military action, and every person has the right to access the means of communication and information on the Internet.
