British Office for National Statistics (ONS) reportedthat the consumer price index (CPI) in June increased by 7.9% compared with June last year. The June price increase was the lowest in more than a year, it is less than the May figure (8.7%) and analysts’ forecasts, interviewed Reuters (8.2%).
The slowdown in inflation was largely due to lower fuel and transport prices (-0.7%), as well as a significant slowdown in the growth of prices for furniture and household goods (0%), alcohol and tobacco (0.1%), clothing and footwear (0.2%). Food prices in June rose by 0.4%, while in May – by 1.2%.
Experts believe that the downward trend in inflation in Britain will continue in the coming months. “The June slowdown should continue with a larger slowdown in July thanks to lower energy bills,” Souren Tiru, director of economic research at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, told CNBC.
