The head of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Ella Pamfilova began to summarize the results of the presidential elections. The final turnout was 77.44%. This is a historical record for the Russian Federation.
“For Russia this is a high turnout. We analyzed, in general, this has never happened in the history of new Russia,” said Mrs. Pamfilova. As the head of the Central Election Commission explained, the historic turnout was ensured by three-day voting and the Mobile Voter system. Also, in her opinion, one of the main factors for the high turnout was the foreign policy pressure on Russia from the West. “The people of Russia do not tolerate pressure either within the country or from outside,” Ms. Pamfilova emphasized.
According to the head of the Central Election Commission, 87,113,127 voters took part in the voting (the population of Russia at the beginning of January was 146,203.6 thousand people). At the same time, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 372 thousand people voted in elections abroad. A record number of voters voted for Vladimir Putin in these elections, Ella Pamfilova emphasized. 75.9 million votes were cast for him.
Ms. Pamfilova also noted that the Central Election Commission has no information about invalidating the voting results at any polling stations, which is unprecedented. At the same time, 709 ballots were declared invalid at 11 polling stations during the elections. Also, by decision of the courts, nine members of election commissions in five regions were suspended from work.
The previous record for turnout in presidential elections was in 1991 during the presidential elections of the RSFSR. Then the turnout was 74.66%. Then six candidates took part in the race: Boris Yeltsin, Nikolai Ryzhkov, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Aman Tuleyev, Albert Makashov, Vadim Bakatin.
The Central Election Commission has already processed 99.7% of the protocols. Vladimir Putin is in the lead with 87.31% of the votes. Mrs. Pamfilova reportedthat the final results of the CEC will be announced on Thursday, March 21.
