Turkish exporters asked to allow transactions with the Russian Federation bypassing banks – Kommersant

Turkish exporters, amid problems with money transfers, asked the country’s authorities to allow transactions with Russia bypassing banks, writes Economy with reference to sources. The publication notes that Turkish legislation allows them to receive income from trading with 33 countries not only through a bank, but also not to declare it.

Ekonomim’s interlocutors say that “the money transfers were cut off like a knife.” They ask to make an exception for export transactions only within the framework of trade with Russia.

According to the publication, the Turkish Assembly of Exporters reported that in January exports to Russia decreased by 30.4% compared to the same period last year. Exports in the month amounted to $551.1 million, compared with $792.1 million in 2023.

Problems with payments, as Ekonomim notes, began after the visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Turkey on January 5. One of the topics of his discussion with the Turkish authorities was military operations on the territory of Ukraine.

According to Kommersant, the situation with bank transfers began to become complicated in the summer of 2023. In December, Turkish banks began to refuse to work with Russian ones, fearing sanctions. Russian Ambassador to Turkey February 16 statedthat the problem is being resolved at a bilateral level.
