From October 7, Turkey plans to five times increase the cost of fees for the passage of merchant ships through the Bosporus and Dardanelles, transmits newspaper Sabah, citing sources in the Ministry of Transport of the Republic.
“Turkey will five times increase the cost of passage through the straits in accordance with the rights granted to it by the Montreux Convention. The currency exchange payment system, which was fixed at a 75 percent discount in 1983, was abolished, ”the publication reports.
According to the agreement signed in 1936, the dues for the passage of merchant ships were set in the French franc (germinal), which amounted to $0.80. Over time, due to inflation and the rise in the price of gold, the fees were almost reduced to a minimum, the newspaper notes.
Turkey has the right to collect fees for lighthouses, evacuation and medical care from ships passing through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. Due to the increase in the cost of fees, the current income of $40 million will increase to $200 million.
The convention restored Turkey’s sovereignty over the Bosporus and Dardanelles from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean in 1936. At the same time, Turkey undertook to comply with the principles of international maritime law. The document established a different regime for the passage of warships for the fleets of the Black Sea and non-Black Sea states.
Subject to prior notice to the Turkish authorities, the Black Sea states may pass their warships of any class through the straits in peacetime. Significant restrictions on class (only small surface ships pass) and on tonnage have been introduced for warships of non-Black Sea powers.
