Turkey says Crimea should go to Ukraine if agreement with Russia is signed

If an agreement is signed between Russia and Ukraine, Crimea will have to become part of Ukrainian territory again. This statement was made in an interview with CNN by the official representative of the President of Turkey, Ibrahim Kalin.
“Crimea is part of Ukrainian territory. This should be the basis of any agreement that will be concluded,” he said (quote by TRT Haber).
Kalyn stressed that Turkey’s position on the issue of Crimea has not changed since 2014. The Turkish authorities consider the annexation of Crimea to Russia an “illegal annexation” of Ukrainian territories.
The day before, the Crimean Platform forum, created at the initiative of Ukraine, was held for the second time. During his speech, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated that he does not recognize the entry of Crimea into Russia. He stressed that the return of Crimea to Ukraine is a requirement of international law.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine. After that, the parties met several times at the negotiating table. The previous meeting took place in Istanbul on March 29. Then the Ukrainian side introduced written proposals to resolve the conflict, which included the abandonment of plans to return Crimea by military means.
Crimea became part of Russia in 2014 after a referendum. According to its results, 96.77% of voters in the Republic of Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol were in favor of joining Russia. Nevertheless, Kyiv continues to insist that Crimea is Ukrainian territory and accuses Russia of “occupying” the peninsula. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea is “finally closed.”
