Presidents of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov met on December 14 for the first time in the Turkmen city of Turkmenbashi (former Krasnovodsk). The leaders of the three countries discussed the issues of gas supplies, at the summit the unrealized project of the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline for supplies from Turkmenistan through Azerbaijan and Turkey to the EU was again mentioned.
Erdogan said he was ready to “start work on transporting Turkmen natural gas to Western markets” (quoted by Anadolu). Prior to this, Bloomberg, citing a high-ranking Turkish official, reported that Ankara is using the meeting to revive the idea of transiting Turkmen gas through Turkey to Europe. As a result of the summit, five agreements were signed, including a memorandum on cooperation in the energy sector.
