Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has abandoned the idea of building a new advanced microchip packaging plant in northern Taiwan, reports Bloomberg. The project was valued by the company at $2.9 billion.
TSMC announced construction of a new plant in August of this year. It was to be built near the company’s existing factories in Taoyuan in northern Taiwan. However, the company faced public discontent. Local residents have strongly opposed the construction of the new plant, noting that the government is buying up land around the existing industrial park in Taoyuan at prices far below market prices to expand the industrial zone.
As TSMC’s CEO previously explained, the new plant is needed to meet high demand in the market. The current capacity of TSMC, which is the largest microchip manufacturer in the world, is no longer enough. The launch of a new production site should double the capacity for advanced microchip packaging. The company will now consider alternative options for building the plant.
