British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced plans to lift the ban on gas production in the country by hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Previously, this method of mining was criticized by environmentalists.
“We will end the moratorium on our huge shale resources, as a result of which we will be able to receive gas in six months,” Truss said at a meeting of parliament (quote according to TASS).
We are talking about obtaining gas using fracking – a method of hydraulic fracturing of a geological formation. It is specified that gas production in this way will be resumed in those areas where the idea is approved by the local population.
As part of the fight against the energy crisis, the UK authorities also intend to issue licenses for oil and gas production in the North Sea, the new prime minister added. According to her, about 100 permits will be issued.
The British government introduced a ban on gas fracking in November 2019. The decision was made due to the risk of seismic activity.
In early March, The Telegraph reported that the British government was considering resuming shale gas production. The initiative was proposed in connection with the UK’s plans to abandon Russian energy resources. So, in March, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that Britain intends to refuse oil supplies from Russia within a year. The country’s authorities also want to stop buying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia as soon as possible.
