Trump charged with storming the Capitol

Former US President Donald Trump is indicted in the January 2021 Capitol storming case. This is with reference to Special Counsel Jake Smith and the indictment informs The New York Times.

In total, Trump has been charged with four counts. The first concerns a conspiracy to deceive the United States. Two of the allegations are related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol vote confirmation process – the former US president is accused of obstructing this process and conspiring to this end. He is also charged with conspiracy to violate civil rights, a charge related to attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 state elections.

The newspaper notes that Trump’s charges come at an “extraordinary moment” in the history of the country – in the midst of his campaign to return to the White House. He is, in fact, charged “with trying to use the levers of state power to undermine democracy and stay in office against the will of the voters,” the NYT says. Trump himself said the charges were an attempt to interfere in the 2024 elections.

The indictment also includes six accomplices of Trump, whose names were not released, but the description of their actions allows us to conclude that a number of significant people from the former president’s entourage were involved. The document says that Trump’s claims of electoral fraud were false and he knew about it. In a message to reporters, Smith blamed Trump for the events at the Capitol, adding that the riots were fueled by his lies.

Trump is due to appear in federal court in Washington on Thursday. The case will be heard by Judge Tanya Chatkan, who previously handled cases of the January 6, 2021 riots.

On July 9, Trump was charged with 37 counts in the case of illegal possession of classified documents. Later, on July 28, he was charged with new charges related to withholding classified documents. However, Trump declaredthat he will continue to fight for the presidency, even if he is found guilty in a number of criminal cases.

On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters gathered for a demonstration in his support in Washington. They stormed the building of the US Congress and interrupted the meeting, at which the results of the elections held in the country were to be approved. Five people were killed in clashes with police. After the Capitol was stormed, Congressional Democrats accused Trump of sedition and demanded his impeachment. Trump himself condemned the incident. According to him, political violence cannot be tolerated.
